Elizabeth Gadsby is an artist and set designer. She primarily creates work for live performance including Theatre, Dance, Ballet and Opera.

She is a Sydney based artist working on Darug, Gundungurra, and Gadigal land.

Her background in installation and site specific works influences her design process, lending itself to works of scale.

Sydney Theatre Company’s resident Designer from 2016-2019, she designed a body of work for the Company and, as part of the core artist team, contributed to the artistic programming and visual marketing for the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Her work as a designer is highly collaborative, working closely with the director to develop the conceptual vision for a production. In 2017 and 2018 Elizabeth co-directed the Sydney Chamber Opera and Victorian Opera production of the THE RAPE OF LUCRETIA presented at Carriageworks in Sydney and then at the Theatre Royal in Hobart with Kip Williams.

Gadsby has worked for Australian and International companies including Bangarra Dance Theatre, Louisville Ballet, Sydney Chamber Opera, Opera Queensland, West Australian Ballet, Sydney Theatre Company, Belvoir Street Theatre, Griffin Theatre Company, Barking Gecko Theatre Company, Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne Theatre Company, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, The Powerhouse Museum, Vivid Sydney and in 2024 Sydney Dance Company and The Gate Theatre. Her work has been included numerous times in Sydney Festival, Queensland Festival, Perth International Arts Festival, Holland Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Adelaide Festival, Dark MOFO and the Venice Biennale of Architecture.

Gadsby’s work has received support through Create NSW and the Australia Council for the arts. She is a William Fletcher Scholar and was the 2015 artist in residence for City of Sydney’s Creative Living Work Space program.

She is a guest lecturer at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts, and is currently undertaking a Masters in Curation and Cultural Leadership at UNSW.
